STORY
It was Mahalaya morning.
The familiar voice of Mahishasura Mardini floated through the old radio in the corner of the room. Outside, the neighbourhood was slowly waking up. The fragrance of shiuli flowers drifted in through the open window, while somewhere in the distance, a faint sound of the dhak announced that Puja was near.
She stood quietly in front of the old wooden mirror.
For a moment, she saw herself.
And then, she saw the little girl she once was.
She remembered those Puja mornings from years ago—running barefoot across the courtyard, collecting shiuli flowers before sunrise, waiting impatiently for Ma to finish getting ready, and listening to Baba say, “Cholo, anjali'r shomoy hoye jacche.”
Durga Puja had always been more than a festival to her.
It was the smell of new clothes and incense.
It was the sound of dhak echoing through narrow lanes.
It was standing in long queues for pushpanjali.
It was bhog served on banana leaves.
It was evenings spent wandering from one pandal to another, holding her parents' hands, with the whole neighbourhood dressed in lights.
And, of course, it was Ma's sarees.
She could still remember watching Ma get ready for Ashtami. The saree would be carefully folded over her shoulder, her hair neatly tied, a small red bindi placed on her forehead.
As a little girl, she would stand beside her and ask,
"Ma, amakeo kokhon tomar moto shari porte debe?"
Ma would laugh and say,
"Boro hole."
Years had passed since then.
She had grown up.
The little girl who once waited to wear a saree was now standing in front of the mirror, preparing for Puja herself.
She reached for Sanjhbati.
As she unfolded it, the saree seemed to carry a familiar warmth—the kind found in old Puja photographs, ancestral homes, evening lamps and stories passed down from one generation to another.
The pure cotton felt soft against her skin.
The delicate handwoven threadwork brought an unmistakable touch of craftsmanship.
Its playful multi-coloured palette reminded her of everything she loved about Puja—the colours of flowers, the glow of pandal lights, the red of sindoor, and the changing shades of the evening sky.
She began to drape it.
The saree was lightweight and easy to handle, falling naturally around her. With every pleat, another memory seemed to return.
Shashthi—when the first excitement of Puja filled the air.
Shaptami—when the streets became crowded with familiar faces.
Ashtami—when everyone gathered for anjali.
And Nabami—when she wished the celebrations would never end.
She looked at herself in the mirror again.
This time, she smiled.
She wasn't trying to recreate the past.
She was carrying it forward.
That afternoon, she stepped outside wearing Sanjhbati.
The neighbourhood looked almost the same as it did in her childhood, yet everything felt different.
The old tea stall was still there.
The familiar para club was decorated with lights.
Children were running around in new clothes.
Women were walking towards the pandal with flowers in their hands.
And the dhak was getting louder.
She walked towards the Puja pandal.
As she entered, the fragrance of incense filled the air. The idol of Maa Durga stood beautifully beneath the lights, surrounded by flowers.
She folded her hands.
For a brief moment, she closed her eyes.
She thought of Ma.
She thought of those mornings.
She thought of the little girl who once believed that growing up meant leaving childhood behind.
But perhaps she was wrong.
Because standing there in her Sanjhbati, she realised that some parts of childhood never really leave us.
They simply wait quietly—
in an old photograph,
in the sound of a dhak,
in the fragrance of shiuli,
in the warmth of a mother's saree,
and in the way we dress for Puja.
That evening, after sandhya arati, she walked home beneath strings of golden lights.
The saree moved lightly with every step.
Comfortable.
Soft.
Effortless.
Yet full of character.
She stopped for a moment beneath an old streetlamp and looked at the pallu resting over her shoulder.
It reminded her of the warm glow of an evening lamp—the gentle glow that makes an ordinary moment feel timeless.
And suddenly, she knew why this saree felt so familiar.
Sanjhbati wasn't just a saree.
It was a feeling.
A feeling of returning home.
Of growing up without letting go.
Of carrying Bengal in every thread.
Of celebrating Durga Puja not only as a festival, but as a collection of memories that become more precious with time.
She smiled and continued walking.
The dhak was still playing somewhere in the distance.
The lights were still glowing.
Maa was still there.
And, for one beautiful evening,
she was that little girl again.
